Please Keep Carolyn in the Light.

I am very sad to share with you that Carolyn passed on at 5.25 wed mar 14.2012 in Solentiname Nicaragua. She was suddenly and dramatically taken ill in the morning. I was with her the whole day along with many close friends; the nurse was here, but she died in my arms surrounded by friends. In local tradition, friends and the community stayed with us from that moment on through the night. Many folks I did not know, but they wanted to be with her. Friends brought food and the men built a beautiful casket. We had a community service at 3pm; she was buried at 5:15 Thursday and then we had a fiesta to celebrate her life. We lit a fire when she died, paused by the fire before burial, and we will keep her flame going for seven days.

Paz y an abrazo

Please help us preserve her legacy through the Carolyn Parker Memorial Fund.

Student Scholars in CPU PDF Print E-mail

The Mission of the Capcitación para Universidad is to supplement regular Colegio for motivated students by providing voluntary, advanced placement courses and remedial tutoring as necessary, that challenges and empowers students. CPU is an innovative “school in a school” complementing the rudimentary government primary and secondary school system. The challenge is that the Colegio of Solentiname is a distancia school in Nicaragua that meets only Saturday and Sunday every other weekend. This system was developed for schools in rural areas where students needed to work to support the subsistence existence of their families. In the past, students who were motivated to go to University, were either unable to pass the entrance exams, or pass the first semester of mandatory courses. It is not the fault of these students that the Distancia system has failed them. With your help we intend to help students overcome these barriers.

CPU focuses on four key components of student development: Espanol, mathematics, ESL and study techniques. It is a comprehensive challenging program that supports and encourages students to succeed in high school while preparing them for the rigors of University. Students will leave CPU with the skills and knowledge necessary to pursue their vision for the future and confident in their ability to do so. In CPU Thursday day session, we will review useful research and study skills, tutor time, and technology skills. Our methodology includes a focus on offering advanced placement courses, and elective subjects that are not available in Distancia colegio, as well as innovative programs to develop critical thinking and creative learning. The goal is to use these new tools to get the students thinking for themselves, and developing a lifelong love of learning.

Our priority has changed from simply providing the opportunity to attend University to supporting students until they graduate from University. We want to instill the dream of University in every student, thus the clave system of student name and projected year of graduation from University.

  • We have 29 students attending CPU. Sponsorship for a Spider Student is $25.00 a month or $300.00 per year since CPU meets every month.

Please remember this is hopefully a mutual committment for their five years of University, although we understand that your situation can change, and you can cancel the recurring donation at any time.

All donations are pooled together for each group of students, and we hope you will be able to create a personal connection with one of these students to show that "we care" about their future. It’s a tangible and measured way to support the future of Solentiname, with some great rewards!
