Honoring the Spirit of a Quiet Person with a Persistent Vision

000_CarolynCloseup_000

We will continue Carolyn’s legacy of progressive values and grassroots activism in Solentiname by education to empower youth to change their society.  It is a proactive, holistic, inclusive approach that recognizes that education equips youth to break the cycle of economic and social poverty in their community. With your generosity honoring Carolyn’s initiative, we can make the Alianza a lasting organization to enable the community to educate its children and forge its future.

Carolyn provided the vision for Sobresalientes (motivated student) a multi-faceted competency-driven, participatory, student centered  educational program for students from Solentiname. It is an innovative “school in a school” complementing the rudimentary government primary and secondary school system. Our approach includes a focus on developing critical thinking and creative learning. The goal is to use these new tools to get the students thinking for themselves, and developing a lifelong love of learning. Our program is entirely voluntary, open to all students from Solentiname, with a special concentration for female students.

It is a progressive, comprehensive program that starts with reading in preschool, culminating with scholarships for University.

2012 Carolina Memorial Fund

Our goal is to raise $15,000.00 -- the most we have ever raised privately! Each year the Alianza has grown and now we are sup! porting 13 students and our other programs. Over 665 students (approximately 63% of all of the students from Solentiname) participate in one of our voluntary programs

  • $2000.00 to buy new books for leer and BiblioBote (bookmobile by boat).  Our donation is matched with $3000.00 so we receive $5,000.00 in books.
  • $2526.00 --50% of the beca fund for 13 students in full time University. Full time students receive a small stipend of $35.00 per month to help with University costs.
  • $8056.00 -- 25% of our program budget  (no administration costs) to run our programs, concentrating on Leer Solentiname & BiblioBote, Capitation para Universidad and Sabatinos.
  • $1250.00 -- Special fund to spearhead a community planning effort to help the community create a vision for what is important in the year 2020.
  • $1168.00 -- Contingency Emergency fund for becados and other emergencies.
