Olivia Guevera

All of you who have traveled with us to Nicaragua and the Solentiname Islands have gotten to know a very special young woman. Olivia Guevara. Olivia has been living in Solentiname with her aunt Marie helping out at the lodge and concentrating on her studies.

Olivia’s thirst for knowledge and commitment to education is remarkable. It is a drive that come from somewhere inside of her and has been nurtured by her aunt. Olivia’s interests are biology, archeology and history, all of which Solentiname has an abundance of. She understands the value of an education, not only for herself but also for what it will enable her to bring back to her community.

She would like to come to the US to finish University, and we are working to set up a scholarship for her. Several clients have pledged support for her and we must make certain that the scholarship is sustainable for her education.

We invite you to join us if you can help her reach her potential. Ideally we are asking people to commit $500.00 to $5000.00 a year for her scholarship. At this time we are thinking that she will live with us in Vermont. She has been provisionally accepted at Southern Vermont College in Bennington,

There is limited governmental assistance for education in rural Nicaragua. Through the commitment of Ernesto Cardenal, poet, priest and sculpture, the six primary schools and one high school in Solentiname have been assisted by donations from various organizations. It is an ongoing effort to support the Solentiname schools and unfortunately there are no funds for students who wish to continue their education either in Nicaragua or abroad.
