The mission of Lentes Solentiname, is to provide basic eyeglasses at low cost to people who have no access to vision care. About 10% of primary school students in developing countries have poor vision, yet in virtually all of these countries very few children wear glasses. The importance of eyeglasses to the empowerment and self-sufficiency of an individual is obvious to those of us who rely on (and perhaps take for granted) our eyeglasses

Every year, J Michael Coppinger,  Director of the Rural Eyeglass project visits Eyes on Solentiname (at his own expense) to further train providers and teachers, and to supervise  distributions. To date the local  team has held eye exams in 9 villages and examined a total of 172 eye patients and distributed 256 pairs of reading glasses of different capacities. Future distributions are planned in other municipalities in the region Rio San Juan.
