Please Keep Carolyn in the Light.

I am very sad to share with you that Carolyn passed on at 5.25 wed mar 14.2012 in Solentiname Nicaragua. She was suddenly and dramatically taken ill in the morning. I was with her the whole day along with many close friends; the nurse was here, but she died in my arms surrounded by friends. In local tradition, friends and the community stayed with us from that moment on through the night. Many folks I did not know, but they wanted to be with her. Friends brought food and the men built a beautiful casket. We had a community service at 3pm; she was buried at 5:15 Thursday and then we had a fiesta to celebrate her life. We lit a fire when she died, paused by the fire before burial, and we will keep her flame going for seven days.

Paz y an abrazo

Please help us preserve her legacy through the Carolyn Parker Memorial Fund.

Solentiname 2020 PDF Print E-mail

The objective of Solentiname 2020 is to create a clear vision for the future of the Archipelago of Solentiname that is proactive, and locally guided and managed. At the core of the 2020 is a desire to manage growth, to enhance existing communities, and to maintain the high quality of life in Solentiname. 2020 is a community-driven strategic planning effort engaging stakeholders that will enhance quality of life, manage growth, and provide a blueprint for lasting development as Solentiname enters the 21st Century. Because Solentiname has maintained its integrity and remains very special, we suggest adapting the concept of Limits of Acceptable Change (LAC) to preserve what is important. Once those indicators of Change have been identified, encourage appropriate, sustainable development and responsible tourism in Solentiname within those guidelines. We hope that Solentiname 2020 Vision will be a catalyst to bring people together in a noble, logical diagram, inspiring in vision and clear in purpose, pointing Solentiname toward the next 15 years and beyond

Our starting point is that a strong local community is an essential element of sustainable development. We believe that neighbors, friendships, alliances, partnerships, resilient economies, and civic participation make for a robust community fabric. As in ecological systems, vitality in local social and cultural systems is a function of diversity, interconnectedness and exchange.

Sponsoring Organization and Partners:

  1. Solentiname Solidarity Alliance is the Coordinating Organization, and our mission is to be a collaborative partnership of the people of Solentiname and other organizations to promote social and economic justice through alternative models of sustainable community development and activism.
  2. Cosponsor is the Huelva con Solentiname and working partners include, but not limited to the following stakeholders:
    1. APDS
    2. Solentiname Colegio
    3. Groupo Tourismo
    4. Union of Artists
    5. Small business owners
    6. Fishermen
    7. Farmers

We envision the process moving through 4 phases:

  1. What are Solentiname's strengths and weaknesses
    1. Take a careful inventory of existing conditions, interviews with community leaders, neighborhood residents and organization representatives.
    2. Set up a “Steering Committee,” that will reflect the community of Solentiname and act as an executive advisory group. The Steering Committee will be drawn from partners, and will help identify issues for full committee discussion and makes recommendations for action. But does NOT make any decisions, rather is responsible for making sure that the communities ideas are reflected.
    3. Anticipated Strengths
      1. Peace and tranquility of the archipelago
      2. Under developed
      3. Isolated
      4. Strong family groups and a clear sense of community
      5. Pride in Solentiname
    4. Anticipated Concerns
      1. Transportation both within the island community, and to San Carlos. Presently there is collectivo transportation 3 days a week.
      2. Education, both primary, secondary and adult GED
      3. Develop responsible tourism to benefit the full community, not just the hotels and transportistas.
      4. Culture and the arts
      5. Land use and appropriate development
      6. Develop farming and fishing
      7. Healthcare
  2. Establishing the Limits of Acceptable Change -- LAC
    1. What is important for us to preserve.
    2. Establishment of indicators of the Limits of Acceptable Change (LAC) as evaluation criteria
  3. Our Future, our Responsibility -- Developing a Consensus Vision
    1. What do we want our community to be like in the year 2020
    2. Community feedback on Vision principles and alternatives,
  4. Action Planning Phase --Creating New Solutions for Old Problems and New Times
    1. Preparing an Implement able Land Use and Sustainability Plan
    2. In order for the Solentiname 2020 Vision and Action Plan to remain a viable and effective guide for shaping our community’s future, it is important to keep the Action Plan “tuned-up.” Nothing is constant but change.
